How To Spruce Up Your Living Room

After living with a room decorated a certain way for a few years, it's not uncommon for a homeowner to get an "itch." The kind of itch that makes them want to freshen up the place and get a new look.

Redecorating can really change the whole mood of a room. If you spend much time in the room or if it's centrally located within your home, you may find your own general outlook changing whenever you're there.

I usually start with some inexpensive tricks. Paint is one way to really change the look instantly. Painting is never quite as easy as the television commercials suggest, but the power of color is indisputable. Be sure to remove any nails or eye bolts first before you spackle holes and paint.

After painting, play with the arrangement of your furniture a little. If you re-orient the layout of the room you change the traffic flow, and you get something different to look at.

Plants can also brighten a room. Floor plants add elegance. Hanging plants take advantage of a room's height. The bonus is you don't have to look at the dirt, and a pretty pot can serve as a work of art. Get a feel for the weight of the hanging plant, then find some eye bolts suited for that weight. The plant can hang beautifully in a corner near a window.

Finally consider the placement of your wall art. Once you've decided where the large and small pieces go, get a friend to help you determine where to put the eye bolts. After getting them firmly placed, you can use the wire or thread with the artwork to hang it beautifully.
